Helping you find rest through storytelling.
When I first came to Ghana, I thought I had everything I needed. My “basket” seemed full — money saved, excitement, faith, and the thrill of following God into something new. But as time went on, that basket started to feel lighter. My resources stretched thin, and soon I found myself staring into what looked like a lack.
In those moments, the lies were loud: “Maybe God is punishing me. Maybe I’ve done something wrong. Maybe He left me here to figure it out alone.”
But then came a whisper in my spirit, quiet and steady:
“Child, look again. Each morning, I place just enough inside your basket. Not to punish you, but to teach you that I am your source. When the basket feels empty, it is only so you will see My hand filling it daily.”
Sometimes we recognize the value in things when they are gone. And it puts us in a position of dependency and humility to remind us that God indeed is our source.
I began to realize something: I never truly went without. I was pressed, but not crushed. I was stretched, but not abandoned (2 Corinthians 4:8-10). What looked like emptiness was really God’s training ground. He wasn’t taking from me — He was teaching me trust.
Sometimes the greatest provision isn’t an overflowing table, but daily bread. Just enough for today. Enough to keep walking. Enough to remind us who the Giver is.
🌱 The Lessons
The experience in the wilderness teaches us that what looks like a setback is actually God's greatest setup. When your basket feels light, remember these six powerful lessons:
1. Lack is Training, Not Punishment. What looks like emptiness is God creating space for daily dependence. He is teaching you to look for His hand every 24 hours instead of relying on a week's worth of stored provisions.
2. Provision Comes in Daily Bread. The truest miracle is not the large sum saved, but the small, consistent provision that keeps you moving forward. Your job is to focus on today’s needs, knowing the Giver will cover them.
3. Your Worth is in the Giver, Not the Basket. Stop measuring your faith or God’s favor by how full your resources (time, money, or energy) appear. Your true riches are in your trust—the relationship—not the material things you carry.
4. Preservation is a Daily Practice. Preservation isn't a one-time save or a giant stockpile; it's the daily obedience of checking in and allowing God to fill you. You must return to the Source every single morning.
5. The Wilderness Refines Your Listening. Abundance and noise often distract you from God's voice. The forced quiet and lack in the wilderness strips away earthly solutions, compelling you to focus on the Source and refine your ability to hear Him clearly.
6. Humility is the Path to Provision. True provision is unlocked by humility. When you acknowledge that your own strength and savings are finite, you surrender your pride, which is the open door for God's immediate grace to intervene.
📖 Scripture Reflection
“Give us today our daily bread.” — Matthew 6:11
“I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.” — Psalm 37:25
“My God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:19
🙏 Prayer
Father, thank You that You see my needs before I even speak them. Thank You for daily bread, for filling my basket in ways I often overlook. Forgive me when I see lack and forget Your faithfulness. Teach me to trust You, even in the wilderness, and help me remember that Your provision is steady, sure, and always right on time. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
